1/7/12 Operation Vengeance was carried out to kill Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto Commander of the Combined Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The specific mission of the U.S. aircraft to kill Yamamoto was based on intelligence gathered after breaking the Japanese secret code. The death of Yamamoto was considered a huge blow to Japanese morale and considered the equivalent of a major battle defeat.
